RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Crews Sunday evening recovered the body of a Neuse River drowning victim after the man vanished in the same stretch of the river where two other men have drowned since May, officials said.

The initial water rescue call was around 5:25 p.m. at the Raleigh Beach area near the end of Loch Raven Parkway, according to Rosalia Fodera, spokeswoman for the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.

“According to witnesses, an adult male was swimming when he went under and never resurfaced,” Fodera said in a news release.

After about two hours of searching, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, along with partnering agencies, recovered the drowning victim around 7:30 p.m., a news release said.

Since mid-May there have been two deadly water rescue calls in the same stretch of the river, which is just north of the New Bern Avenue bridge over the Neuse River.

The Knightdale Fire Department, Wake Forest Fire Department, Wake County Emergency Management, Wake County EMS, Raleigh Police Department, Youngsville Dive Team, and Raleigh Fire Department all responded and assisted in the search.

The identity of the man who died Sunday will be released after notification of his next of kin.
