RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — UPDATE: The body of a drowning victim was recovered around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office said.

The man’s identity will be released once next of kin has been notified, officials said.

“The Wake County Sheriff’s Office sends our deepest condolences to the victim’s loved ones,” Sheriff Willie Rowe said in a statement. “As more residents find relief from the heat in our county rivers and lakes, our office is collaborating with local agencies on increased awareness and education.

Deputies said a man was reported to have been in the water and did not resurface.

Develynne Camack lives nearby. He says the current and depth changes when you get near rapids at old dam.

“It’s shallow. It’s very shallow for the majority of the area down there, but there is a spot that just drops off to nothing. It’s very deep,” Camack said.

While the stretch of river is not a designated swim area, he says there need to be more warning signs along the river.

“It’s terrible. I wish there were some way to identify that {danger} so people know where it is so they know it gets deep, rapidly,” Camack said.

Search efforts were suspended on Tuesday night due to deteriorating weather conditions, the sheriff’s office said.

Crews will resume with searching the river on Wednesday morning.
