    Oil Springs Fire Update

    Oil Springs Fire Update

The Oil Springs Fire south of Rangely continues to keep crews busy. The Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office reports that firefighters set up sprinkler systems Wednesday around oil and gas infrastructure along County Road 116 to help protect the infrastructure from the fire. The sprinklers are fed by portable water tanks and pumps. The Wednesday update on the Oil Springs Fire also reports that firefighters strengthened containment along Highway 139 and prevented the fire from spreading to the east side of the highway. On the south side of the fire, a hotshot crew is working to build a containment line from Highway 139 to the west. The highway remains closed for public and firefighter safety. Engine crews continued to secure a containment line today around the spot fire between East Douglas Creek and Willow Creek, and will continue to extinguish hot spots near the line. “Nationally, firefighting resources are limited due to the number of large fires burning in multiple states,” shares the Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office. “This has made it difficult for the team to get the requested crews and equipment needed to fully implement its plans for full suppression of the fire. Requests for additional resources continue to be submitted.” As of Wednesday’s report, road closures and evacuations remained in effect, the fire remained at zero percent contained, and acreage grew on Wednesday to 11,933 acres. Battle Continues on Oil Springs Fire as County Enters Stage 2 Fire Restrictions

Effective today, June 25th, Rio Blanco County has entered Stage 2 Fire Restrictions. This comes as little surprise as crews continue the battle with the Oil Springs Fire south of Rangely. One thing local law enforcement is asking of those traveling in the Rangely area is to slow down to 35 MPH between mile marker 19 and 21 on Highway 64 because there are workers in that area around the clock due to the fire. Cooler weather on Thursday helped crews as they fought the fire and as of Thursday evening the Oil Springs Fire is now 5 percent contained and at 12,707 acres. Read more
