Driving through Iowa can mean long stretches of farmland, so it’s always great to see a roadside stop with some snacks or treats – especially when it’s a local, independently-run place that has stood the test of time, rather than a chain. That’s the case for one small-town ice cream in Iowa, hiding in the laid-back locale of Monroe. Now, I’m New Jersey born and raised, so imagine my surprise when I found out that this fan-favorite frosty spot, which has been open since 1992, is named… Jersey Freeze! The name comes from an original 1950 business that was run by a family that raised Jersey cattle, and it stuck. One thing that’s also stuck? The large crowds lined up for delicious, old-school frozen treats from March to October every year.

Youth Entertainment Series Returns to the Pella Opera House Tuesday
The Pella Opera House will host its free early elementary kids show Overall Buddies with Lori Lynn on Tuesday. The Overall Buddies program is part of the Pella Opera House’s Youth Entertainment Series (Y.E.S.) sponsored by Vermeer. The program will be performed by Lori Lynn Ahrends, who is a children’s singer/songwriter and international speaker with a Master’s Degree in education. Pella Opera House Executive Director Cyndi Atkins says the Youth Entertainment Series is a great way to offer a variety of programs to kids of all ages.
George Daily Presents “The Hobbit” With Help of Central College
Several Central College graduates, faculty and staff members are contributing to the production of “The Hobbit” August 1st-4th at The George Daily Auditorium in Oskaloosa. Based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien and adapted by playwright Kim Selody, the production will be performed as part of the George Daily Youth Theatre’s 25-year anniversary celebration.
