DNR: Ethanol plant pollution likely harmed public health for years near Shell Rock
(Des Moines, Iowa) – A report from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources shows an ethanol-producing facility in northeast Iowa expelled excessive pollutants into the air for several years that can cause cancers and other health effects. The Iowa Capital Dispatch reports the DNR recently issued an administrative order with regard to the POET Bioprocessing plant near Shell Rock. The Order says “Actual harm to the environment and public health likely occurred” at the facility, which makes about 140 million gallons of ethanol each year, along with other products from the leftover materials of the fuel production. The excessive pollution was tied to one of those additional products: a protein ingredient for animal feed.
ONE DEAD, ONE INJURED AFTER CRASH IN RURAL JASPER COUNTY
NEWTON — A crash in rural Jasper County on Wednesday night resulted in the death of a Des Moines man. According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State patrol, on Wednesday night, around 11:50pm, 41-year-old Michael Croy of Des Moines was driving a Mercury Cougar northbound on Highway S-74 south in Jasper County when the vehicle crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Ford F450 driven by 62-year-old Karl Peters of Monroe. The F450 came to rest in the west ditch, while the Cougar came to rest in the roadway. Authorities arrived and pronounced Croy dead at the scene. Peters suffered minor injuries and was transported to Mercy One Newton for medical services.

RAGBRAI’s stop in Knoxville was a success according to city employees, and showcased the town to a massive crowd. The event was made possible by hundreds of volunteers, who stepped up to work in several different areas during Wednesday’s festivities. RAGBRAI last came to Knoxville a decade ago and the Knoxville RAGBRAI Executive Committee spent months preparing to make the 2024 stop successful.
