PIERRE, (KCCR) — An Iowa woman accused of stealing one-point-seven-eight million dollars of state money intended for foster children made her first court appearance Thursday in Pierre. Lonna Carroll is charged with two counts of Aggravated Grand Theft. Magistrate Judge Margo Northrup granted Carroll’s request for a court appointed attorney. Aplington-Parkersburg alum Megan Johnson is Central College’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. The award recognizes graduating female athletes who have distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their college careers. Johnson finished her kinesiology degree with a 3.94 GPA. She’s going to graduate school at the University of Oklahoma to use her final year of athletic eligibility.

Third-ranked Remsen St. Mary’s will play number five Lynnville-Sully Friday afternoon in Carroll in the 1A state baseball championship game. Remsen St. Mary’s beat Mason City Newman 7-4 Wednesday night in the longest tournament game ever played. It took 14 innings to decide it and included a nearly one hour rain delay.
