    Air-conditioned senior center, libraries open during Reno's triple-digit heat

    Reno-Sparks will see temperatures in the triple digits starting on Independence Day, with an excessive heat warning going into effect Saturday.

    July 4 will be sunny and hot with a high of 101 degrees, the National Weather Service in Reno said.

    Temperatures are forecast to rise through the weekend and into next week.

    Reno NWS issued an excessive heat warning for Reno-Sparks and surrounding areas starting 10 a.m. Saturday and running through 10 a.m. Wednesday.

    Friday's high will rise to 103 degrees with sunny conditions and calm winds of 5 mph, Reno NWS said. Saturday will reach 106 degrees with Sunday ticking up to 107.

    Conditions won't change much at the start of next week. Reno's Monday forecast is 106 with Tuesday dropping to 105.

    Where to stay cool in Reno during heatwave

    The Washoe County Senior Center will have extended hours during the upcoming heatwave.

    Seniors can stop at 1155 E. Ninth St. on the Fourth of July from noon to 7 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday. The center will also be open from noon to 7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

    Next week, the center will be open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Water will be provided.

    Washoe County libraries will be closed on July 4, but many locations will be open on Friday and into the weekend. See a complete list at washoecountylibrary.us/libraries/ .

    People can also head to the large splash pads at Melio Gaspari Water Play Park at 7100 Pyramid Way in Sparks or North Valleys Water Splash Park at 8085 Silver Lake Road, Reno.

    For people experiencing homelessness, the Resource Center at the Nevada Cares Campus is open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. Water, meals, restrooms and laundry facilities are available at the campus.
