DAYTON — Rhea County Road Supervisor Glen Varner passed away on Tuesday, June 11. He was 82.

He was a resident of Rhea County since 1966, after he met the love of his life, his wife, Mable.

He owned Varner Construction company for 40 years and loved working for and serving the people in his community; it was his passion.

He was the Rhea County Road Supervisor from 2016 until his passing and participated in community events such as the Rhea County Fair and supported local athletic programs. He voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1963, serving six years, followed by an additional 26 years in the National Guard, reaching the rank of Chief Warrant Officer before retiring in 2004.

Varner was instrumental in the success of the Rhea County Fair.

“Glen was one of the Rhea County Fair Association’s ‘Founding Four’ and his passion for the Rhea County Fair was unmatched. As recently as Monday evening, Glen was telling the board of his newest ideas to improve the grounds and to better our fair,” the Rhea County Fair Board said in a released statement. “He stood strong for what he believed in and the Rhea County Fair would not be what it is today without him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mable, the entire Varner family and all of Glen’s friends. Thank you for sharing him with us at the Rhea County Fair. Our grounds won’t be the same without him.”

Funeral Services will be Saturday, June 15, 2024, at 11 a.m. in the chapel at Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton, with Pastor Jeremy Deal and Brother Jackie Penney officiating.

Burial will follow at Rhea Memory Gardens with Military Honors.

    Family received friends Friday, June 14, 2024, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, June 15, 2024, from 10 to 11 a.m.

A full obituary appears on page 3.
