Red Cedar Symphony to present Majestic Melodies

    2024-02-08

Majestic Melodies, featuring music from two continents, will fill the Red Cedar Symphony’s spring concerts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, at Chetek Lutheran Church in Chetek, and 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Rice Lake.

"The Outdoor Overture" by Aaron Copland conjures up mental images of the wide-open space of the American West. Dmitri Shostakovich depicts a stormy period of Russian history in his Symphony No. 5 Finale, while Franz Joseph Haydn delights with a movement from his (“Surprise”) Symphony No. 94. Other selections include a call to the dance floor of our imaginations with the folk music-inspired Slavonic Dance No. 8 by Antonin Dvorak, while Virgil Thomson’s The River uses folk melodies to tell the story of the Mississippi River.

With these Majestic Melodies, conductor Adam Bever will march attenders into spring with a refreshed appreciation for the music of Slavic and American cultures.

Concert admission is $15 at the door, with those ages 21 and under admitted free.

Established in 1983 and housed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Rice Lake, the Red Cedar Symphony draws classical musicians from throughout northwestern Wisconsin, including Rice Lake, Osseo, Cumberland, Ladysmith, Spooner, Chetek, Gordon, Trego, Springbrook, Bruce, Hayward, Cable, Winter, Bloomer, Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire and Foster.
