From Territory To State: Iowa’s Journey To Statehood On July 4th
As big days go, July 4th is one of the big dogs. It's America's birthday. July 4th is not just a big day for America. It's also part of Iowa history. We learned from Iowa PBS that early in its journey, the U.S. Congress set up a roadmap for western lands to become states, remembering how the American colonists weren't exactly fans of British rule (cue the Revolutionary fireworks). One of their star acts was the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. It gave a how-to guide for places like Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin to join the statehood club.
Doctor: Fireworks pose very real risk to your eyesight
(Radio Iowa) – An eye doctor who serves northeast Iowa dreads being on call during the Fourth of July, as she says there’s always a case of someone being blinded by fireworks. Dr. Anna Kitzmann, an ophthalmologist with Gundersen Health in Decorah, says fireworks can cause devastating injuries to the hands, face and especially to the eyes.

GTSB Reminds Drivers No One is a Good Drunk Driver this July 4th Weekend
(Iowa) – As Iowans commemorate Independence Day, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) has one critical message, “No One’s a Good DRUNK Driver.” In 2022, a person lost their life every 39 minutes in alcohol-related crashes on U.S. roads. From July 3 to July 7, law enforcement statewide will heighten vigilance against drunk driving on our roads.

Cover Crop Business Accelerator from PFI and ISA celebrates 5 years
Practical Farmers of Iowa and the Iowa Soybean Association offer their Cover Crop Business Accelerator (CCBA) program to support cover crop adoption in the Midwest. The program is now in its fifth year, and it helps new and emerging cover crop businesses with the seed and application services they need to reach their conservation goals. Ross McCaw, a CCBA participant and farmer from Marengo, talked about why he started his cover crop business.
Ravens on Wrong End of Shut Out Against Panthers
Just 24 hours after clinching the Southeast Iowa Superconference North Division Championship, the Hillcrest Academy Raven baseball team suffered a setback 2-0 in Kalona at the hands of the Pekin Panthers. Pekin got two runs in their first at bat, and Panther pitchers JaeDon Wolver and Henry Adam made those two tallies stand up. The Pekin pair combined to allow just three hits and two walks while striking out 16 Raven batters. After surrendering two in the first, Hillcrest starter Seth Ours went five innings, scattering nine hits and two earned runs while striking out six. Phoenix Anderson worked two frames with a walk and two strikeouts. Hillcrest got a hit each from Liam Schrock, Mason Helmuth and Lincoln Miller. The Ravens are now 15-4 after the loss, Pekin is 9-9. Hillcrest is next on the diamond Saturday when they host HLV in the first round of the Class 1A Playoffs.

Washington Woman Arrested on Felony Drug Warrants
On June 29th at approximately 10:49 pm the Washington County Sheriff’s Office received a report from the Cedar Rapids Police Department that they had a subject in custody that was wanted in Washington County. They arrested 49-year-old Wendee Chalupa of Washington on three counts of controlled substance violation, a Class C Felony, three counts of possession of a controlled substance, a Class D Felony, and failure to affix drug stamp, a Class D Felony. Bond was set at $40,000 and extradition arrangements were made with the Washington County Jail. Chalupa later bonded out. KCII will bring you more information as it becomes official.
8-year-old Iowa boy dies after being backed over by truck while riding bike
Iowa State Patrol and Ottumwa police are investigating the death of a 8-year-old boy who was killed by a truck while riding his bike on Tuesday.
