Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Richmond police hosted a community walk in Whitcomb Court on Wednesday, meeting with safety partners and community members following a string of recent shootings.

Just this month in Richmond, four teens have been killed in shootings. During the walk and talk, officers and city officials gave safety tips and opened the dialogue to neighbors in the area.

Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards said they’re hoping the event leads to cultivating better relationships with the community. Edwards said there are several more community walkthroughs planned.

“This is where our community needs us,” Edwards said. “We had a 16-year-old young man shot and killed right here. So we want to be here for our community.”

City leaders on Monday announced a curfew enforcement in an effort to combat the recent rise in gun violence. Police have also announced the early beginning of Operation Safe Summer, a partnership with state troopers intended to “suppress violent crime and increase public safety throughout Richmond.”
