NJ man used false expense reports and credentials to steal $1.2 million, affidavit says

A Belle Mead man arrested on theft charges this week allegedly used a fellow employee's credentials to embezzle more than $1.2 million over a four-year period, according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained by NorthJersey.com.

An investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office determined Sang Park, 44, obtained the money by submitting "fraudulent expense reimbursement requests" 117 times between May 11, 2018, and Feb. 17, 2022. The affidavit states Park used a colleague's administrative credentials to approve the requests via the employer's reimbursement system knowing the expenses were false.

Park's activity included 83 transactions from the company's payroll account totaling more than $685,000, and another 34 transactions from the expense account of an additional $569,000. The company name was redacted from the affidavit but is headquartered in Ridgefield Park, according to the prosecutor's office.

The investigation into the alleged embezzlement began in December when the Ridgefield Park Police Department contacted the prosecutor's office. Park was arrested at his home Wednesday and charged with two counts of second-degree theft by deception.

Park is currently in the Bergen County Jail awaiting a first court appearance.
