Jack Edward Allison III, 52 of Robbinsdale, was charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon following an incident earlier this month at a light rail station in St Paul.

According to court documents, Allison was riding a train on March 2 in St. Paul when he allegedly used a folding knife to stab another passenger, who sustained multiple wounds to the left side of his torso/abdomen and needed to be transported to the hospital.

According to the criminal complaint, Allison claimed he stabbed the man in self-defense, and told the police that the man threatened him with a butcher knife. Another witness confirmed it was the knife the wounded party had used and said he held the knife upside down “towering over us.”

In a review of the Metro Transit video, an investigator noted that the injured party approached Allison in a threatening matter with a knife and then walked away and put it in a backpack. The police located a large knife in a backpack on the train following the incident.

The wounded party told police he asked Allison for a phone charger and then he walked away from Allison. He returned because he left his backpack on the floor between him and Allison. When he went to retrieve his backpack, Allison allegedly took out a knife and charged at him. The man said he moved away but he ran out of places to go. Allison allegedly caught up and stabbed him on his left side.

Allison’s next court appearance will be March 26.

He was charged in Ramsey County District Court with a felony for assault in the second degree - a dangerous weapon. The charge carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a $14,000 fine.
