ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Kershaw Beach and the Dog Beach will be closed due to a suspected harmful algae bloom.

The beaches will remain closed until further notice. According to the DEC, bodies of water contain harmful algae bacteria — or HAB — when algae grow out of control and produce toxic and harmful effects on people and animals.

Report harmful algal blooms with ‘NYHABS’ reporting system

The HABs were observed on the Canandaigua Lake on July 22. People and animals are asked to avoid discolored water or surface scum.

These HAB sightings happened weeks after the park was damaged by severe thunderstorms and tornados in Western New York — including Canandaigua.
