ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Several local police departments hosted events Tuesday night as part of a nationwide initiative to help build relationships within communities.

National Night Out events were held in all quadrants of the city. It’s an effort that local law enforcement says goes a long way in building trust.

“So it’s kind of just showing who we are and what we do right and it’s breaking down that barrier, it’s humanizing us, it’s interacting, it’s talking with kids and their parents and anybody that wants to show up,” Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy Brendan Hurley said. “We’re a uniform, we’re a badge, but there’s a person underneath that. Without the community, we can’t do what we do. So we need their help and we need to have that good relationship.”
