ROXBURY, NJ – Less than a week after it was reactivated, ending three decades of dormancy, the historic fountain at Hopatcong State Park is off again, thanks to a harmful algal bloom (HAB) in Lake Hopatcong. Fire company coin toss turns up wedding ring in Sussex County
FRANKLIN BOROUGH, NJ (Sussex County) – A coin toss fundraiser turned up a wedding ring, and the Franklin Fire Department is hoping to get it back to its rightful owner. The fire company, in a post on its Facebook page, said that the wedding ring was found in one of their buckets sometime between Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21 in Franklin Borough.
2 New Jersey residents plead guilty to helping physician distribute opioids
Two residents in Paterson, N.J., admitted to conspiring with a physician to distribute opioids without a legitimate medical reason. Jasmine McGregor, 32, and Jhenelle Lewis, 35, pleaded guilty to conspiring with Lisa Ferraro, MD, to prescribe oxycodone to people who were not actually Dr. Ferraro’s patients and whom she never examined or questioned, according to a July 18 news release from the Justice Department.
Sparta Residents Asked to Complete Survey for Updated Open Space and Recreation Plan
SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta Environmental Commission, a statutory board, is working with the Land Conservancy of New Jersey to update Open Space and Recreation Plan for the community. The are asking Sparta residents to complete a survey to help them “identify goals and recommendations for the plan.” The survey takes about five minutes to complete. East Orange's Rashawn Stuart Completed Eagle Scout Project
East Orange, NJ-Thousands of young people participate in scouting each year, with many starting as youngsters and continuing on to earn the highest rank of Eagle Scout. Approximately 55,000 young people, year after year, achieve this important milestone. Service to mankind is what Scouting is all about. The Eagle Scout service project highlights the Scout's leadership abilities and positively impacts the community. East Orange resident Rashawn Stuart is a dedicated member of Troop 5350 in Belleville. Rashawn planned, supervised and constructed 21 Wood Duck Boxes for the Essex County Environmental Center in Roseland. Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. congratulated him on his achievement and thanked him for completing his Eagle Scout project within the Essex County Park System. Then and Now: Northeast Corner of Valley Road and Bellevue Avenue
In this edition of “Then and Now,” we look at Upper Montclair’s northeast corner of Valley Road and Bellevue Avenue. At the turn of the 19th century, pharmacies such as J.H. Laubenheimer at the northeast corner of Valley Road and Bellevue Avenue were ubiquitous, and there were often multiple pharmacies within a single block. This location operated as a drugstore at least into the 1950s, and many residents may remember it as Valvano’s or Val’s. The pharmacies often featured soda fountains; note the wooden counters running along the outside of the pharmacy.
