ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — The Fighting Illini baseball team will have a big of a Rockford Rivets feel to it next spring. On Friday, Rivets’ shortstop Jack Zebig became the second Rivets’ player in a week to commit to the Fighting Illini.

Zebig has appeared in 23 games for the Rivets this season. In 89 at bats he has a .270 batting average with three home runs, five doubles and 17 RBIs. He is also averaging one walk per game.

Zebig entered the transfer portal after playing two college seasons at Maryville University in Missiouri. This past spring as a sophomore he had a .362 batting average with 13 home runs and 64 RBIs. He also was 8-for-8 in stolen base attempts.

Last week, Rivets’ third baseman Kyle Schupmann announced that he was transferring to Illinois from the University of Cincinnati. Schupmann has been on fire for the Rivets. In 30 games he is batting .368 with four home runs and 36 RBIs. He also has seven doubles and four triples.

The Rivets play in the Northwoods League. It’s a summer wooden bat league for college eligible players.
