The Harrison Family YMCA’s gymnastics program recently took 23 gymnasts to the N.C. Gymnastics State Championship held in Greensboro.

The program features recreational and competitive gymnastics offerings and is dedicated to fostering athletic ability, social development and interpersonal skills through fun and positive activities.

The Y’s competitive gymnastics team emphasizes the value of hard work, excellence and spirited competition. This year-round program offers gymnasts the opportunity to compete against other teams while making new friends and improving their skills.

The Y’s Rocky Mount Elite Gymnastics Team competed at the state competition April 26-29. The competition featured more than 1,200 gymnasts from 46 teams across the state. The Rocky Mount team represented the local Y in various levels, including the following: Copper, Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Vicky Mayer, the local Y’s gymnastics coordinator, has grown the program since her arrival in 2022.

“My first day of practice there were only six girls, and now we are continuously growing, taking 23 girls to the state (competition),” Mayer noted, adding that “Even though the girls are more concerned about the number of medals they received, they don’t even realize that their overall scores have improved significantly, and I could not be prouder of them.”

Looking ahead, 12 gymnasts in the program are preparing to compete in the AAU Gymnastics National Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla., where gymnasts from across the United States will showcase their talents.

To celebrate and support the team, the Y is holding a Gymnastics Showcase from 10 a.m. to noon June 15. The team and pre-team gymnasts will perform routines they have practiced during their AAU season in a format similar to a gymnastics competition. Everyone interested in the gymnastics program is invited to attend the showcase.

Admission is $10 (for anyone age 13 and up), or $5 per child (age 5-12), and children 4 and under can attend for free. The event is cash only.

The Y also has a tots gymnastics program with weekly sessions. These classes are designed to help improve coordination, major muscle motor development and general fitness in a fun and safe environment. For more information, contact Mayer via email at vmayer@rmymca.org.
