A missing hiker who is believed dead after a fall in Montana has been identified as Rogers native Dylan Honnoll.

Honnoll, a Rogers High School graduate and current Montana State University student, was hiking near Rimrock Lake near Billings on July 12 when he fell into the rapids at East Rosebud Creek:

Dylan was attempting to cross the creek near the outlet of Rimrock Lake while hiking the well-known “Beaten Path” trail from East Rosebud Lake to Cooke City. He had just completed his sophomore year at Montana State University, was active in sports, and had spent a lifetime in the outdoors with his family and friends.

According to a news release from the Carbon County Sheriff, rescuers believe he was "likely trapped underwater near where he fell in." On Friday, a sheriff's helicopter flying above the creek identified "additional items" belonging to Honnoll in the water.

"He had just completed his sophomore year at Montana State University, was active in sports, and had spent a lifetime in the outdoors with his family and friends," the Carbon County sheriff said. "Our thoughts go out to Dylan’s family, friends and fellow students during this difficult time."

A prayer vigil is scheduled for Monday at 9 p.m. in Rogers, with participants expected to gather briefly at the Honnoll family home:

Honnoll was wearing a green t-shirt, black shorts, a white ball cap, blue sandals and was carrying a royal blue backpack. Anyone in the area who finds anything related to the incident is asked to contact the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office at 406-446-1234.
