    Sports briefs: Cherokee hosting sports camps

    ROGERSVILLE — Cherokee baseball will hold a camp for players going into grades 6-8 on July 8-9 from 5-7 p.m. each day. The cost is $30 per day. Each camper will need to have a glove, pants, helmet, cleats/turfs and a drink.

    July 8 is also the makeup date for tryouts for anyone who missed the original date and wants to play baseball at Cherokee High School in the 2024-25 school year. Tryouts will be held from 3-5 p.m.

    Lady Chiefs hosting volleyball camp

    ROGERSVILLE — The Lady Chiefs volleyball camp for boys and girls in grades 4-12 will be held July 8-10 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Cherokee High School gym.

    The cost is $40 per player and can be paid the first morning of camp. Visit https://form.jotform.com/241562648307055 to register so that organizers can order shirts.

    FAFSA & Pickleball event is July 11

    ROGERSVILLE — Cherokee High School will host FAFSA & Pickleball, a free event sponsored by The Niswonger Foundation, to encourage and assist Hawkins County students and families who need help completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

    Any Hawkins County student who graduated this year and needs help completing the FAFSA is encouraged to stop by the Cherokee High School tennis courts from 2-4 p.m. for assistance with the FAFSA and/or to play pickleball. To learn more, email hawkinsfafsahelp@gmail.com.

    Learn with state champs at RCS camp

    ROGERSVILLE — The state champion RCS Lady Warriors will host a basketball camp for rising first through fifth grade girls and boys July 15-17 from 9 a.m. to noon at Rogersville City School.

    The cost is $65 and includes a camp T-shirt and competition winner prizes.

    SMS Eagles Booster Club needs volunteers

    SURGOINSVILLE — The SMS Eagles Booster Club will hold volunteer work days to paint the outside of the football field house and press box, do some light landscaping and clean up around the field on Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20.

    Friday’s work will begin at 6 p.m. and include painting the field house and press box in preparation for new signage the school has planned. Volunteers will also need to offload brick dust pallets into the baseball storage facility, pull/spray weeds and spread mulch.

    Any work not completed on Friday will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday. All booster club members and football parents are strongly encouraged to participate.

    Chiefs’ mattress fundraiser is July 27

    ROGERSVILLE — The Cherokee football team wrapped up spring practice at Knox Carter and finished the first phase of summer conditioning/practice with a solid 7-on-7 performance. Anyone looking for ways to support the Chiefs is invited to participate in a pair of fundraisers.

    The football team will host a mattress fundraiser on July 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the school gym. Anyone in the market for a new mattress, pillows or other sleeping items is invited to stop in. Learn more about the mattress fundraiser at https://vimeo.com/637591323.

    The football team is also selling the annual Mobuck discount cards. Anyone interested in purchasing one can reach out to any football player.

    Sign up now to ‘Ride for Hope’

    ROGERSVILLE — Signups are underway for the “Ride for Hope” bicycle event. The former “Ride Like Hale” event is back on Aug. 10 with a new name and a new beneficiary, but it still offers options for 21-mile, 36-mile or 62-mile rides through scenic Hawkins County. The rides, sponsored by Just Ride Bikes & Fitness, will leave Hawkins Elementary School in Rogersville starting at 8 a.m.

    The entry fee is $35 and includes rest stops and lunch. Learn more and register online at rideforcamphope.com. Proceeds benefit Camp Hope of East Tennessee, a 100% free summer camp located in Hawkins County.

    School-record 219 Pioneers named to honor roll

    ROCK HILL, S.C. — A school-record 219 Tusculum University student-athletes were named to the 2023-24 South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll. The conference had a record 3,560 student-athletes from the league’s 13 member institutions honored for their achievements in the classroom.

    The SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll recognizes those student-athletes who carry at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and have completed at least one season in the sports of football, women’s volleyball, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s track and field, and men’s wrestling.

    Tusculum’s 219 total surpasses the previous record of 204 honorees during the 2019-2020 academic year. Eight Pioneers have maintained a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA while at Tusculum. They are Tanna Bookhamer (women’s soccer), Inmaculada Delgado (women’s cross country/track and field), Danielle Jason (softball), Johanna Palacio (women’s tennis), Keylon Reynolds (softball), Natalie Spaitis (softball), Nehemiah Storey (football) and Helena Walts (women’s soccer).
