After 8 years of restoration, Kittery life-saving station is Maine's newest museum
Not far from the crowded beaches of York County, a very different kind of seaside attraction has just opened and is drawing visitors of its own. The Wood Island Life Saving Station Museum, a quarter-mile off Kittery Point, is a 116-year-old, meticulously restored outpost of what was a forerunner to the Coast Guard. From here and other stations, the U.S. Life Saving Service once sent rescue crews, rowing open boats, to aid mariners in peril.
City to Resume Renaming Duplicate Streets
Summer Street in Springvale will soon be renamed. The City of Sanford will resume the process of renaming streets where duplicate names exist, according to Planning and Codes Director Jamie Cole. The project began in 2022 when Sherburne Street in Sanford was renamed Tanguay Street to avoid a conflict with Sherburne Street in Springvale.

Roger Wood’s Podcast: NH Childcare Centers Finally Get Promised Checks
It took a year, but childcare centers in New Hampshire qualifying for state funds have finally received them. The legislature appropriated $15 million for hiring and retention help for childcare workers. The money was finally released after 287 child care executives wrote to the state Department of Health and Human Services requesting the distribution. Grant Money to Help Fund New Ambulance
Ambulance 1 is the primary ambulance out of the Springvale Station. Congresswoman Chellie Pingree’s office contacted the Sanford FIre Department (SFD) on Aug. 7 with news that SFD has been awarded a grant through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. The grant, amounting to $422,727 according to the FEMA website, will fund 90 percent of the cost for an additional ambulance. The grant helps firefighters and other first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards. In 2024, Maine cities and towns received 13 awards from this grant program.
