A notable member of the Nassau County community is accused of failing to complete home renovations, despite getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars. What should have been Alethia Ahmed-Parkin’s dream home in Baldwin has become a nightmare. In 2022, she signed a contract with John Boyd, of Boyd Builders Inc., which is also known as Boyd Development Inc. The company is run by the same John Boyd Sr. who is the president of the Roosevelt Chamber of Commerce. The Boyd Builders logo is displayed prominently on the chamber’s website. “He said that he was well vested in the community, everything looked legit,” said Ahmed-Parkin. “He said he’s licensed and insured so I hired him.” According to the contract with Boyd Builders, the renovations on her home would cost $295,000. Ahmed-Parkin said she was told the work would be complete within eight months of March 2022. As the months went by, the work never got done. Two years later, she still had no floors, no kitchen, an unfinished bathroom and barely walls. Ahmed-Parkin said Boyd would give her excuses about the delay in construction, yet she said he also kept demanding more money to pay for materials and workers. Ahmed-Parkin said she paid Boyd $270,000 up front, trusting that he would get the job done. She was hopeful to have the home finished by the time her kids returned home for college break. Her wishes to host the holidays were dashed—twice. “My son is at college. He goes, 'Mom, there's no need for me to come home for Christmas because we don't have a place to live,” Ahmed-Parkin said. She’s not alone. Team 12 Investigates uncovered an active lawsuit against Boyd and his construction company for breach of contract and unjust enrichment. The lawsuit claims that a Freeport homeowner paid Boyd $28,500 for work that was never done. Team 12 Investigates also found that Boyd does not have a valid contractor license with the Department of Consumer Affairs in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Ahmed-Parkin claims his insurance policy is also invalid. “I started calling the insurance company to put in a claim only to find out there's none,” said Ahmed-Parkin. “Who thinks that someone's going to give them fake insurance? But that's the hindsight.” Team 12 Investigates called a number that Boyd listed at the bottom of his contract change order with Ahmed-Parkin. It is the same number that is listed on the Roosevelt’s Chamber of Commerce website under the Boyd Builders logo. A man who answered said he did not want to discuss complaints against his company and abruptly hung up. Calls to Boyd’s attorney were unreturned. Ahmed-Parkin is sounding the alarm because she said she paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to a contractor—the president of Roosevelt’s Chamber of Commerce—who is now apparently nowhere to be found. “You take someone on their word when they say that they're prominent in the community,” Ahmed-Parkin said. “I just didn't think that he would put his reputation on the line for money.” Ahmed-Parkin said she filed a complaint with the Nassau County Department of Consumer Affairs. She has since hired a new contractor to finish work on her home. To verify a contractor’s license with Nassau or Suffolk counties, visit the links below:
