Update: Air quality alert in effect for 5 N.J. counties Sunday
An updated air quality alert was issued in effect until Sunday at 11:15 p.m. for Passaic, Hudson, Bergen, Essex and Union counties. "The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has issued an Air Quality Action Day for the following counties: Bergen, Passaic, Hudson, Essex, Union. From 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday. An Air Quality Action Day means that Ground Level Ozone within the region may approach or exceed unhealthy standards," says the National Weather Service.
N.J. Public Defender names first-ever police accountability director
A veteran public defender will lead a new effort to track police and prosecutorial misconduct in cases handled by the office, Public Defender Jennifer Sellitti announced. Danica Rue started with the Office of the Public Defender in 2010, in Essex County. Her new title is Director of Investigations and Police Accountability and she’ll report directly to Sellitti.

On the run: Man charged with murdering NJ mom
MANCHESTER — A suspect has been charged with murder in the death of a 25-year-old mother found shot to death in the stomach. He is a fugitive from justice. Maxwell Johnston, 35, of Manchester, is the suspect in the killing of Gabriella Caroleo, of Barnegat. Her body was found near the intersection of Ridgeway Road (Route 571) and Hope Chapel Road (Route 547) in Manchester on June 27.
