ROSELAND, NJ -- The Roseland Borough Council at its Tuesday, July 16 meeting approved an ordinance authorizing a Memorandum of Understanding with Essex County regarding the installation and maintenance of electronic pedestrian crossing signs.

"They are going to be in the center of town and they're going to go at the crosswalk," Roseland Councilwoman Jean Perrotti explained. "The pedestrian pushes the button and the lights flash."

Perrotti said that, according to Roseland Deputy Police Director John Matheis, "If you have it flash all the time, it doesn't signal the car, so we're going to have it flash when the button is pushed."

Perrotti said that the borough hopes to have the new signs delivered and installed "within the next four weeks."

The goal of the new signs will be to "slow down the traffic in the center of town and keep the community safe."
