Blount Construction gets Riverview Road stormwater drainage project

Blount Construction was awarded a $301,751 contract to construct a stormwater drainage improvement project on Riverview Road by the Sandy Springs City Council on Tuesday.

Public Works Director Marty Martin said in 2022 the city hired an engineering firm to develop plans to design corrections to the stormwater system deficiencies under the roadway at the property at 4787 Riverview.

The project will replace the deficient drainage system for the roadway and rehabilitate a corrugated metal pipe culvert that carries stormwater to the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. That property belongs to the National Park Service and will require a special use permit from the federal agency.

Sidewalk decisions to include property density

Sandy Springs plans to consider the density of adjacent property to decide what sidewalk projects the city will construct.

The existing scoring priorities include right-of-way availability, evidence of pedestrian activity, utility relocations, proximity to schools or parks, overall project cost, and filling gaps in the sidewalk network.

Residents can reach out to the call center at (770) 730-5600 to be directed to the Sidewalk Program staff within Public Works to request additional segments to be added for consideration. Or they can enter their request online through the Sandy Springs Sidewalk request form .

Property owners can donate right of way for sidewalk projects, which would improve a project’s score.

Public Works staff will present a draft candidate priority-scored sidewalk list to the mayor and council in Q4 2024.

Pedestrian lighting coming to Morgan Falls

Sandy Springs City Council approved an agreement with Georgia Power to install and maintain pedestrian scale lighting on Morgan Falls Road from Roswell Road to Morgan Falls Overlook Park.

The city will pay $703,750 for the installation, and a monthly lease of $2,642 for ongoing equipment, maintenance, and energy costs.

Georgia Power’s transmission line along Morgan Falls Road creates constraints on what other structures can be installed. Public Works Director Marty Martin said standard pedestrian scale street lighting can’t be installed in some areas along the road. Georgia Power came up with solutions so the project can move forward, he said.
