Dozens of Georgia-based painters, sculptors, photographers, jewelry makers, and clothing designers are popping into the third annual Brookhaven Art Pop-Up and Shop for three weekends this month.

The pop-up runs Thursday to Sunday from Sept. 12-29 at Town Brookhaven with a range of art including mixed media, paintings, photography, and wearables. An opening reception will be held on Friday, Sept. 13 from 6-8 p.m.

Explore Brookhaven and smART CONNECT are putting on the event, which attracted 100 artist-applicants, which will be whittled down to 42 participants. It’s the largest number of applicants to date.

While the core is local talent, the art is celebrating the diverse artistry of creators from places like South Africa, Haiti, and Eastern India. Expect an increased number of photography collage, both digital and texture, and smaller pieces with a wide range of affordability.

Artist Gary Deutsch is returning to the pop-up this year with mosaics made from recycled ceramic materials. He enjoys meeting a swath of people, from Brookhaven business owners to people wandering by the festival. Deutsch is originally from Connecticut, and has lived in the metro Atlanta area for nearly 30 years.

“I pick and choose which shows I participate in, only about one or two art shows a year,” said Deutsch. “Brookhaven has a nice mix of art, good variety of people participating, and a good audience.”

Lisa Thomas has lived in Brookhaven for 10 years. During the pandemic, she began studying photography and has been making abstract photography with bubbles for about 18 months. The pop-up is Thomas’s first show, and she is looking forward to seeing the work of the other artists and sharing her art with other people.

Sharon Moskowitz of smART CONNECT said curating the show is a way to bring art to life with ongoing support and collaboration from the community.

“These talented artists bring incredible value. They are in-person, talking about their artwork, generating interest and creating a draw for other area businesses. The economic impact and happy factor go hand in hand,” said Moskowitz.

Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals group will use the art pop-up as a jumping off point for Crawl for Fall , a networking event on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
