This weekend in Iowa: The House Flies album release, a Benefit for Palestine and a look at Davenport’s twisted history
It’s the middle of August, which means humid days, college students scrambling to move in, and as this edition of the Weekender proves, plenty of quality events throughout Iowa. The Moline-based shoegaze band The House Flies celebrates their new album with a show at the Raccoon Motel. A full lineup of performers is slated to perform at a benefit for Palestine at the Englert Theatre. If you’re in the mood for drinks and Iowa history, the Putnam Museum will feature UI professor and Davenport native Gates Thomas on “Davenport’s Twisted History” as part of its History on Tap lecture series on Thursday night.

16-year-old from Waukee charged as an adult with second-degree murder in stabbing
A 16-year-old from Waukee was charged with second-degree murder in connection to a stabbing during a dispute that left a 23-year-old man dead last week. Waukee Police Department officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Prairie Park Lane for a stabbing incident on Aug. 5, Chief Chad McCluskey said. New Skills Based Testing Program Offered at Iowa Central Community College. Iowa Central Community College is pleased to announce a new opportunity for people interested in improving their work-related skills through proficiency-based testing in the areas of Industrial Machines and Industrial Mechanics. “We are now offering proficiency-based courses where students can earn their degree by completing courses using hands on skills through proficiency testing,” says Dr. Stacy Mentzer, Vice President of Instruction at Iowa Central Community College. “What is different about this process is that many employers in our nine-county service area need individuals with these skills and need them on the job. Proficiency-based testing creates a win-win situation because people can work while they gain the skills they need,” added Dr. Mentzer.

Woman Hit By Boat On Lake Of The Ozarks, Seriously Injured
LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. — A woman from Adel, Iowa, was hospitalized after reportedly being hit by a boat on Lake of the Ozarks, Wednesday night. Jeremy Boysen, 42, was driving a 2022 Sea Ray around 11:50 p.m., Aug. 14, when occupant Brooke Boysen, 42, voluntarily jumped from the vessel, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
