The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) under the Office of the Washington, D.C. Mayor has a program to help provide fresh produce for families in need. Fresh vegetables are important elements of a healthy diet. This program gives out free produce weekly to D.C. residents.

DPR Communal Farms are organized as production farms managed by DPR staff and community volunteers.

Community members are able to receive free food, volunteer, and participate in educational opportunities that are hands on. People can go to the farm during certain hours each week to self harvest and pick up fresh produce. The program is expected to run through November 28, 2024 (weather permitting).

The Weekly Veggie Giveaways are for one hour from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. These are the locations:

Tuesday at Edgewood Roof Top Farm (Ward 5), 301 Franklin Street NE.

Wednesday at Lederer Garden (Ward 7) 4801 Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue NE.

Thursday at Powell Communal Farm (Ward 1) 3149 16th Street NW.

This program to benefit local residents of Washington, D.C. has been helping many families obtain fresh vegetables.
