(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento Police Department said on Wednesday it will be holding a DUI checkpoint during the Fourth of July weekend.

The checkpoint will be held in the Midtown neighborhood from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., police said.

“The Sacramento Police Department is committed to keeping the traveling public safe and reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol,” the agency said. “While medicinal and recreational marijuana is legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.”

Why does California law enforcement announce DUI checkpoints?

Drivers charged with a DUI for the first time can face fines up to $13,500 and many penalties, including a suspended license.

“If you plan on drinking or taking medications that may impact your ability to drive safely, plan on staying home,” police said.

A grant from Cal OTS funds the DUI checkpoint, police added.
