Platkin and the Division of Consumer Affairs announced today that Walmart has agreed to pay $1.64 million to settle allegations of unlawful unit pricing practices across its 64 New Jersey retail stores. About 80 people overtook Aurora’s City Council meeting Monday, causing the mayor to recess the meeting three times in an effort to bring about order. The council then agreed to extend public invited to be heard beyond the one-hour time limit. The speakers showed up to chide the City Council for not punishing the officer that shot and killed Kilyn Lewis. Lewis was a suspect in a crime which is why police approached him. Body camera footage released by the Aurora Police Department showed Lewis did not have a gun and repeatedly yelled “I don’t have nothing!” with his hands in the air. Despite this, officer Michael Dieck killed him with a single shot from his rifle. Lewis never had more than a cell phone in his hand, the video showed.

This week, City Council is set to begin discussing the proposed deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars to renovate EverBank Stadium. At its center is the agreement for a $1.4 billion stadium overhaul, the cost of which would be split 50-50 with the Jags after the city also covers $150 million in overdue maintenance and repair work. The city has said it plans to pay for its $625 million construction portion, for the most part, by redirecting revenue from a half-penny sales tax, passed as “the Better Jacksonville Plan.” But it’s not a straight line from the tax revenue pot to getting cranes in the air — the plan depends on budget changes to avoid debt on other projects, and using money that would have gone toward paying down that debt on the stadium reno.
