Where to find down-home BBQ in Tucson this Fourth of July
Editor's note: This story was originally published in 2023 and updated in 2024. Fourth of July is a classic summer holiday: in places that face enduring winters, Memorial Day and Fourth of July are opportunities to celebrate the weather in the company of loved ones with parades, swimming and grilling in backyards.
When Life Speaks…Women On Our Own Listens
A lovely May day took nine Women On Our Own (WOOO) ladies to see an exhibit at the Tucson Botanical Gardens. The exhibit of interest was called “Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea”. The impact that this exhibit had on each of the women was nothing short of inspiring. Sculptures of marine life such as orcas, penguins and jellyfish were on display and constructed completely out of plastic debris found in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Oregon! Dr. Albie Tross and assistant described each art piece, pointing out that if the right eye of the whale was made from the white sole of a discarded tennis shoe, then the left eye needed to match. If a clear plastic water bottle was used to represent the portions of waves supporting a breaching porpoise, then that effect was carried throughout the display. Plastic garbage was artfully displayed, sending a clear message!
Reid Park Zoo Sets Attendance Record
Reid Park Zoo just set a record for the most people to visit in a fiscal year. Guest number 618,358 walked through the front gate on June 25. The previous record was set nine years ago after Nandi, the first African elephant born in Arizona, was born at the zoo. The zoo greeted the record-setting guest with streamers and a gift package, including a complimentary annual membership; free admission, carousel, train ride, and giraffe-feeding tickets; plush toy animals; and a commemorative brick in the zoo’s entry plaza donated in their honor.
