A student from St. Charles High School was assaulted and had his car stolen late Wednesday morning in the school’s parking lot.

As the student was leaving school for the day at around 11:10 a.m., he was approached in the parking lot by several suspects, a sheriff’s office press release said.

The student was “struck in the head with what appeared to be a handgun,” according to police.

The student dropped his keys, and the suspects picked them up and fled from the school in the teenager’s car.

Emergency medical personnel treated the student’s injuries.

“The assault does not appear to be random, and detectives are pursuing leads,” according to the press release.

“As detectives continue to pursue leads, this is all the information I can give at this time without compromising the investigation,” Diane Richardson, a spokesperson for Charles County Sheriff’s Office, told Southern Maryland News Wednesday evening.

For the time being details on the status and type of the car, the number of suspects, why the incident is being considered not random and if the suspects are students are being withheld until the investigation concludes.

Anyone with information about the allege assault and car theft is asked to call Detective Wimberly at 301-609-6491.
