TWO HURT IN SIDE-BY-SIDE CRASH
The Brown County Sheriff’s Office was called to an incident at the intersection of 190th Street east of 350th Avenue Wednesday at 6:33 pm. Deputies say a side-by-side driven by 22-year-old Blane Wilson of Springfield was westbound on 190th Street was following other ATV riders and tried to negotiate a curve but was blinded by the gravel dust and overturned causing it to roll numerous times. Wilson was taken to the Sleepy Eye Medical Center by Springfield Ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. His passenger Dathan Sergent also sustained non-life threatening injuries. The sheriff’ s office says that, currently there are no charges pending.
HIGHWAY 4 ST. JAMES TO SLEEPY EYE PROJECT UPDATE
Construction on the Butterfield Creek bridge north of St. James has started. MnDOT says traffic is detoured to Watonwan County Roads 3 and 32 and Highway 30 until mid-August. Highway 4 from Sleepy Eye to Brown County Road 24 remains closed to traffic as replacement of the bridge over the Cottonwood River south of Sleepy Eye continues. Traffic is detoured to Highway 14 and Brown County Roads 8 and 24. Resurfacing on Highway 4 from St. James to Sleepy Eye is expected to begin later this summer and traffic will be detoured to Highway 14, Brown County Road 8, Watonwan County Road 5 and Highway 30. The project is expected to be done sometime in early October, weather permitting. Linus, a local 6-year-old who will be starting first grade this fall says his favorite subject or thing to learn about in school is History. Today, he decided that he wanted to put those history lessons aside to make some of his own history, trying science by giving the forecast on tv!
Brewers Win, Top Seed in Region
New Ulm Brewers take advantage of walks and defeat the Long Sox of Lamberton 17 to 7 in seven innings. New Ulm will have the top seed in Region 2C. Lamberton received the sixth seed and will host Gibbon Wednesday night. The Region begins Sunday, when St James travels to Searles for a 5pm game.
Brown County Historical Society has a Busy August
Brown County Historical Society Executive Director Amy Johnson covered an event filled August. This is the month for the U.S. Dakota War Commemoration beginning Wednesday, August 21st. Ron Schenk, 64
Winnebago – Ron Schenk, of Winnebago, a dedicated and hardworking individual who lived life to the fullest, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2024, at the age of 64, in his home surrounded by his loving family. A celebration of his life was at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20, at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, Rev. Mike Omtevedt officiated. Visitation was Thursday, July 18 from 5-7 p.m. at Spencer-Owen Funeral Home. Burial was at Rosehill Cemetery. Online condolences can be left at www.spencerowen.com.

Marine Industry Groups Partner with Sheriff’s Office for Water Safety at Blue Earth County Fair
In Mankato, the Water Sports Industry Association (WSIA) and National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) have joined forces with the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office to promote water safety at the upcoming Blue Earth County Fair in Garden City. Scheduled for July 26th, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, at the Sheriff’s fair booth, the event aims to raise awareness about safe boating practices, featuring the distribution of free life jackets to attendees. Governor Tim Walz emphasized the importance of wearing life jackets to ensure safety while enjoying Minnesota’s lakes and rivers. Blue Earth County Sheriff Jeff Wersal expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasizing the goal of educating the community on water safety and the WSIA’s Wake Responsibly program. The initiative, supported by NMMA’s summer-long life jacket giveaway program, seeks to enhance boating safety and enjoyment across the region.
