St. James Celebrates 4th with Fireworks
The St. James Chamber of Commerce held this year’s 4th of July fireworks on Wednesday, July 3. People gathered in Memorial Park to watch the fireworks, that were put on by the chamber with help from sponsors; St. James VFW Post 1914, St. James American Legion, St James Rotary, St James Sertoma, and Kuehl’s Electric Inc. St. James Chamber of Commerce.

The Warrior Marching Band, under the direction of Doug Kodet, will enter parade competition at Westbrook tonight at 7 p.m. The parade and competition is part of the three day Hospital Benefit Days. Approximately 20 marching bands will be included in the parade competition. Band members are reminded to bring belts for the uniform trousers and wear black socks and band shoes (shoes available at The Palace and Ouren’s Family Shoes).

Martin County Library will offer various events next week. First, meet Munchkin the Miniature Horse 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at the Fairmont Library, 110 N. Park St. in Fairmont and 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at the Truman Community Building. Munchkin is a miniature horse with dwarfism. Meet Munchkin, enjoy a story and make an art project that helps us celebrate what makes us different and unique. This program is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant provided by the Traverse des Sioux Library Cooperative, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Also, join library staff for Books and Brews Morning Edition beginning 10 a.m. Thursday, July 18, at the Fairmont Library. Staff will highlight books about or set during WWI. Bring your coffee and join them. There is no cost to attend this event and registration is not required.

Life Threatening Crash In Brown County
Brown County dispatch received a 911 call at approximately 9:55 a.m. Monday morning reporting a crash. Steven John Meyer, age 77 of Springfield, was driving a 2000 International grain truck Northbound on County Road 8 when he collided with a 2016 Ford Escape traveling Eastbound on US Highway 14. The passenger of the Escape, Patricia Kay Peterson, age 71 of Sleepy Eye was transported to Sleepy Eye hospital. The driver of the Escape, Molly Marie Stimpert, age 32 of Sleepy Eye was airlifted to North Memorial hospital with life threatening injuries.
Smith Mountain Lake 'Pirate Days' set to begin July 19th
The 2024 Smith Mountain Lake Pirate Days are July 19th - 21st with various events taking place around Smith Mountain Lake. The annual Smith Mountain Lake Pirate Days, which organizers call "Southwest Virginia's biggest pirate party in Southwest Virginia", is a family fun event that supports local businesses, nonprofits and charities.
Robert “Bob” Rempel
A Celebration of Life Service to honor the life and legacy of Robert “Bob” Rempel, age 86, of Windom, will be held Thurs., July 11th at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Windom with Pastor Jon Greener officiating. Burial will be at the Mountain Lake Cemetery in Mountain Lake. The service will be livestreamed on the Evangelical Free Church’s Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Robert Lee Rempel was born September 21, 1937, to Frank and Susie (Ewert) Rempel in Mountain Lake, Minnesota and grew up in the Bingham Lake and Delft areas. In his teen years, Robert suffered from Polio. He graduated from Mountain Lake Public School and went on to attend business school for one year in Mankato.

Thomas Peter Platz age 82, of Springfield, MN and formerly of Sanborn, MN died on July 7, 2024, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield, MN. Visitation will be on Thursday, July 11, 2024, from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm and will continue on Friday from 9:30 am until 10:30 am at the Sanborn Community Center. Service will be held at the Sanborn Community Center on Friday, July 12, 2024 at 10:30 am. The clergy will be Chaplain Noel Wetter. Interment will be at the Sanborn City Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield, MN. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sturmfh.com.

Fairmont Police To Host Events
A fishing event titled “Cops And Bobbers” will be held in Fairmont on Tuesday, July 30th at Gomsrud Park. The event is open to kids age 10-14 with all equipment, bait and tackle provided. Pre-registration is required, sign up at the Fairmont CER website. Space is limited for the event, which will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. that night.
County board meets Tuesday
The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners will meet Tuesday at 9 a.m., at the county courthouse in Windom. On the agenda, the board will receive bids for a bridge replacement project on County Road 5, just north of County Road 15. The current bridge has deteriorating timber abutments. The new structure will be a double precast concrete box culvert.
