ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Cardinals legend is fully embracing his switch from the diamond to the stage.

Former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright was a guest on the “Today Show” Monday morning, where he spoke about the transition from baseball to music and performed one of his new songs, “A Good Story.”

Wainwright dropped his debut country album, “Hey Y’all,” in April. On the show, Wainwright mentioned that he used music as a method to get away from the game of baseball.

“When you play as many games as big league players do, you need an outlet. My wife gave me a guitar. My music became something that took my mind away from the field,” Wainwright said. “If you don’t have something like that, you’ll drive yourself crazy.”

Wainwright also gave credit to his former teammate, Matt Holliday, for the performances at his house that plugged him into having a music career and connected him with Grammy-winning artist Gary Baker.

“It wasn’t until I was at my friend Matt Holliday’s house, a teammate of mine, that I was playing for some guys. We would invite 10 to 12 guys over to sing karaoke style all night long; people would request and we would play and sing.” Wainwright said, “My bass player over here, Grammy-winning Gary Baker, was in the audience. His son was next-door neighbors with Matt and Gary saw me play and said, “You know what? Your not bad. Let’s make some music.”

Adam Wainwright will be joining forces with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra for a performance next year on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Stifel Theatre. The performance will be a celebration of “music, baseball, and Americana.” You can buy tickets here .
