ST. LOUIS – One child has died and others have sustained injuries from multiple accidents on eastbound Interstate 70 Thursday morning.

According to police, just after 8 a.m., a Dodge vehicle collided with a tractor trailer, causing debris to travel into other lanes. This debris carried into express lanes, causing a crash involving three more vehicles.

The child, who police say is 3 to 5 years old, was ejected from the Dodge vehicle. The child was transported to the hospital and later pronounced dead. There was no car seat in the vehicle.

“Where the child was seated in the vehicle isn’t exactly known at this time, but there were also two adult driver and passenger in the vehicle believed to be taking up the front seats. So we assume at this time that the child was in the back passenger compartment of that vehicle,” Sgt. Charles Wall said.

The two other adults who were in the Dodge vehicle were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.

Police say it remains unclear how the accident happened and that they are in the early stages of their accident reconstruction investigation.

“As standard with any of our fatal vehicle crashes, the accident reconstruction investigators will do some type of toxicology screening with the involved parties just to rule out the possibility of any impairment. That’s all standard in all of those types of investigations,” Wall said.

All eastbound lanes of I-70 will remain closed at Grand Boulevard.
