Live Lakota Hoop Dance and Culture Presentation by FireThunder family
DEADWOOD, S.D. - Deadwood History, Inc. and the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission will host a presentation by Alex FireThunder and his family at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, July 19, 2024, at the Historic Adams House, 22 Van Buren Street, Deadwood. The event is free for members and $5 for non-members. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch and a chair. In case of inclement weather, the lecture will be moved to the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center (HARCC).
HP releases name of man killed in fatal crash
STURGIS — The South Dakota Highway Patrol has released the name of the man who died Thursday from injuries sustained in a July 1 crash near Sturgis. According to the agency, shortly after 10 a.m. July 1, John J. Lundin, 82, of Sturgis, was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on SD Highway 34 near mile marker 38. At the same time, Jerry L. Seaman, the driver of a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500, was traveling westbound on SD Highway 34. While initiating a left-hand turn into a gas station, Lundin turned in front of the Dodge Ram and the vehicles collided head-on. The driver and passenger of the Dodge Ram, both 72 of Newell, were transported to a nearby hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
Spearfish Jr. Legion finishes 2-1 at Bill Hughes Invitational
SPEARFISH — The Spearfish U-16 American Legion baseball team finished with a 2-1 record at the Bill Hughes Invitational Tournament that ended Sunday in Spearfish. They defeated WESTCO 8-6 Friday before losing to Billings 6-5 Saturday when the game was stopped after six innings because of the time limit.
Belle Fourche Girls Basketball Camps July 15-18
BELLE FOURCHE — Belle Fourche will host a girls’ and boys’ basketball camp July 15-18 at the Belle Fourche Middle School. •The girls will have a camp for grades 8-12 from 4-6 p.m. Monday, and 5-7 p.m. Tuesday – Thursday.
Lead pickleball courts to open July 20
LEAD — An initial $75,000 donation kicked off a fundraising campaign that has almost completely paid for new pickleball courts in Lead. Mayor Ron Everett said the idea to build pickleball courts where the former skatepark and tennis courts were located has been on the city’s wish list for a few years. When Lead residents Brad and Karen Meyer offered to put $75,000 toward building the new courts, the city decided to solicit more donations to offset the construction costs, in an effort to move the project up on the city’s timeline.

Live Like Cash inaugural event a great success
The inaugural Live Like Cash Skate, Scoot and Bike competition was a success on July 4 in Lead. The event drew about 45 participants who competed for a variety of prizes, including bikes, skateboards and scooters. Victim Dies Three Days After Sturgis Vehicle Crash
(Meade County, SD) — The victim of a recent vehicle crash near Sturgis has died. According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, 82-year-old John Lundin was driving eastbound on SD Highway 34 near Sturgis July 1st when he tried to turn left into a gas station and hit a westbound vehicle head-on. Lundin died in the hospital three days later. Two people from the other vehicle suffered non life-threatening injuries.
Sodbuster Earn Series Win
The Hastings Sodbusters split a doubleheader with Spearfish on Sunday. The outcome gave Hastings the weekend and season series win. In the opener Spearfish scored six runs in the fifth for an 8-5 win. Michael Hanna was the hard luck loser giving up only two earned runs in the inning. Hastings managed just three hits.
Paddle boarders save juvenile at Bear Butte Lake
STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade County Sheriff’s Office says a young man in distress in Bear Butte Lake was rescued by a group of paddle boarders on Friday. Meade County Sheriff Pat West says the young man was swimming in the lake when he became tired and was having trouble staying afloat. He says a group of paddle boarders were in the lake and noticed the young man in distress. They were able to get the male up on a board and to the shore where he was treated by Sturgis Ambulance crews.
