An 83-year-old bicyclist died Friday after police say he was struck by a car while crossing a street in St. Petersburg.

Shortly after 7 a.m., Juan Yhanes of St. Petersburg was crossing 16th Street North in a marked crosswalk when the driver of a Dodge Journey attempted to turn left from Fifth Avenue North, the St. Petersburg Police Department said in a news release.

The driver of the Dodge “failed to yield” and struck Yhanes, who had the right of way, the news release states.

Yhanes was taken to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital, where he later died. The driver of the Dodge, whom police did not identify, stayed on the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The crash remains under investigation, the police department said.
