Veterans retreat expands near Thompson Falls
On a peaceful mountain retreat in Thompson Falls, close to 100 people gathered recently to celebrate the acquisition of a new 60-acre facility for a veterans group called, Patrol Base Abbate Return to Base.Located on Tanager Road, this off-grid mountain base above the Clark Fork River exists as a place for veterans from all branches to rest, reconnect with other fellow military personnel, and rediscover the meaning of service to themselves, families and communities. For their hard work and dedication, Plains Public Library, staff, and volunteers received the Excellent Library Service Award (ELSA) by the Montana State Library Commission. Local runners compete in Missoula
Running enthusiasts from Sanders County took to the streets of Missoula on Sunday for the annual Missoula Marathon. Mike Lilly of Thompson Falls finished 129th overall in the full marathon and 19th of 100 in his age group of 30-39. He finished the 26.2-mile course in 3 hours, 31 minutes, 17.55 seconds. Thompson Falls graduate Jacob Naegeli, who now lives in Green Bay, Wisconsin, was 42nd in the same age group, finishing in 3:04:17.59.
Artwork for CFVH nears completion
A Plains man is putting the final touches on a monument of artistry with bugs, birds and copper flower power. Several people have worked on the nine-foot tall copper willow tree, including David Williams, who is adding the several pieces to the tree before it is moved to its permanent home at Clark Fork Valley Hospital. The tree has 16 branches from 41-52 inches long with brass, copper and aluminum leaves, cut by JOM member Heather Allen.

Fifteen-year-old Parker Lind of Plains was cleaning up weeds near River Road West when he came across a baby praying mantis. Once he posed for a photo with his find, he released it in nearby bushes. The praying mantis is often used to control insect populations in gardens, but might also prey on beneficial pollinators, according to the Montana Field Guide. The eggs of a praying mantis usually start hatching in mid June and has a lifespan of 10-12 months.
Sales bring deals, visitors
Sanders County was buzzing Friday and Saturday as hundreds of residents and visitors hit the highways for the annual Sanders Saleing county-wide yard sale event. More than 80 people registered sales for the event, traditionally held the last weekend of June and sponsored by the Thompson Falls Chamber of Commerce. Several other sales popped up throughout the county as well.
Road work begins on highways 200 and 135
Montana 135 between St. Regis and Paradise is a 21.5-mile-long route known as the cut-off road. From 1960 to 1978, it was a connection between U.S. 10 and US 10A and later Montana 200. There was a toll ferry to cross the Clark Fork River close to midway, known today as Ferry’s Landing picnic area. From there, the road and railroad run along opposite banks of the river.
