A magnitude 3.8 earthquake occurred at 9:08 a.m. Saturday about 8 miles north-northeast of Borrego Springs, producing brief, light shaking in many areas of San Diego County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Shaking was reported in Borrego Springs, Julian, San Marcos, Escondido, Ramona, Poway, Boulevard, Campo, Fallbrook, Vista, Encinitas, San Diego and Chula Vista, the agency said.

The quake, which began 7.3 miles deep in the Earth, occurred on the San Jacinto fault zone, one of the most active seismic areas in Southern California. The strike-slip fault extends through parts San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego and Imperial counties.

The fault usually produces quakes in the 3.0 to 4.5 range. But it did generate a 7.1 quake in the San Jacinto-Hemet area in 1899.
