As the 2024 Olympic Games get under way in Paris on Friday, San Francisco and Bay Area residents will have plenty of representation.

Among the 600 athletes representing the United States this summer are four from The City and dozens more with ties to the broader region. Here’s a look at the San Francisco athletes competing for Team USA:

    Kristen Faulkner — cycling

The reigning USA National Road Race champion, Faulkner will make her Olympic debut in the City of Lights. She won the women’s road time trial at the 2023 Pan American Games and finished second at the United States National Road Race Championship’s time trial.

    Alex Massialas — fencing

Massialas will be competing in his fourth Olympics . He’s already won one silver and two bronze medals in previous games. A graduate of Stanford University, he’s a four-time NCAA All-American and two-time NCAA Champion.

    Gerek Meinhardt — fencing

Meinhardt has even more Olympic experience than Massialas; this will be his fifth games, dating back to the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, where, at 17, he was the youngest male athlete to ever compete for the U.S. Olympic team. He won bronze medals at the 2016 and 2020 events.

    Hans Henken — sailing

A graduate of both Stanford’s undergraduate and graduate programs, Henken was a member of the university’s Varsity Sailing Team throughout his collegiate career. He was named team captain for the 2013-2014 campaign, the Cardinal’s most successful season. In 2018, he won the bronze medal at the Youth World Championships in 2018 and became a Under-23 International Moth World Champion the following year.
