49ers set to audition former UFL wideout after impressing in minicamp

The San Francisco 49ers placed sixth in the NFL in passing yards last season, and they have no intention of resting on their laurels headed into the 2024 campaign.

Quarterback Brock Purdy already has reigning Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffery, five-time Pro Bowler George Kittle, and former All-Pro Deebo Samuel at his disposal. However, 49ers management is still looking to add to their impressive roster of talent.

According to a report by KPRC-TV reporter Aaron Wilson , the team will work out wide receiver Monroe Young on Monday.

Young most recently played for the DC Defenders of the UFL after completing his collegiate career with the University of California Golden Bears.

In four seasons at Cal, he totaled 48 receptions for 511 yards and four touchdowns. He saved his best for last, posting career highs with six receptions for 69 yards in the 2023 Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl.

His best season was during his junior year when he hauled in 23 receptions for 231 yards and three touchdowns.

After going undrafted, the Las Cruces, New Mexico native was invited to participate in mini-camp with San Francisco before signing with the Defenders.

Young didn’t get on the field for DC, but made enough of an impression on the 49ers front office to earn another opportunity.

San Francisco has plenty of talent at receiver, especially if they can make peace with Brandon Aiyuk, so the road to making the roster is far from smooth.

If Young is going to stand out, he’ll have to show the qualities that have defined the position under head coach Kyle Shanahan (good hands, versatility, and toughness) and then some.

That will be a tall order in a receiver room that also includes first-round selection Ricky Pearsall and fourth-year veteran Jauan Jennings.
