Cedar Point is one of the oldest American amusement parks, but it hasn't lost any of its excitement and appeal over the years. The Sandusky, Ohio, amusement park is jam-packed with roller coasters, thrill rides, a water park, and even The Barnyard, a sizable petting zoo for animal lovers of all ages.

Unfortunately, things got just a little wild at The Barnyard earlier this week when a pair of the petting zoo's camels made a break for it! One eyewitness captured a now-viral video of her hair-raising encounter with one of the escapees, who was dangerously energetic about its new-found freedom!

"No, no, this is not good," eyewitness @breathing_waterfall warns in the background, but the "Free Bird" breakdown playing over her words says otherwise! In all seriousness, though, this could have been very dangerous. The poor camel seemed confused and spooked, and in its panic, it nearly kicked a man in a power wheelchair ! Fortunately, the kick fell short, and the camel ran a lap down the sidewalk, sending park guests scattering and leaping over fences (for the life of me, I don't know why the trio in the foreground didn't split when they had the chance).

Despite sluggish reactions from some guests, no one at Cedar Point was hurt, and parkgoers got a little extra free entertainment that day. According to USA Today , two camels named Sampson and Artie slipped out of The Barnyard Tuesday evening and "took an unauthorized stroll along Frontier Trail." Thankfully, it didn't take too long for zoo workers to corral the naughty escapees, bringing the Great Camel Caper to a close! Park officials still aren't sure how Sampson and Artie got out in the first place and are currently investigating the incident.

Backlash at the Barnyard from PETA

The camel breakout at Cedar Point may have come to a peaceful conclusion, but the incident still drew the ire of PETA, who made a statement shortly after news broke of Sampson and Artie's daring escape. Their statement accused Cedar Point of exploiting the animals, who were allegedly supplied to them by the mobile petting zoo, Honey Hill Farm.

"No one should be surprised that distressed camels panicked and ran away, hoping to escape a near-constant, chaotic barrage of excessive handling, noisy roller coasters , and screaming parkgoers," read the statement from PETA's Senior Director of Captive Animal Welfare, Debbie Metzler . "PETA is calling on federal authorities to hold Honey Hill Farm accountable for failing to protect these frightened animals - and members of the public who were endangered during their attempts to flee - and urges people everywhere to steer clear of seedy enterprises that exploit vulnerable animals."
