New Michael Pilato Mural to Be Installed in Downtown Bellefonte
A new mural by artist and Centre County native Michael Pilato will soon adorn the exterior of the Waffle Shop in downtown Bellefonte. Pilato will install the mural celebrating several aspects of the borough's history beginning Aug. 2 during the Bellefonte Arts & Crafts Fair, according to an announcement from the Waffle Shop. Mosquito Sample in Ferguson Township Tests Positive for West Nile Virus
A mosquito sample recently collected in Ferguson Township has tested positive for West Nile Virus, according to a release from the Centre County Planning and Community Development Office, which received the results from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Vector Management. It is the county’s first reported positive sample this year. West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne disease that produces severe neurological symptoms in about 1% of humans that become infected as the result of a bite by an infected mosquito. CCRRA Offering Recycling Mini-Grants
The Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority (CCRRA) is offering a mini-grant opportunity to local municipalities, businesses, recycling collection haulers, schools,healthcare institutions and nonprofits. The mini-grant program will provide reimbursement funds for Centre County-based projects that improve recycling education and collection of materials to be processed by CCRRA. Grant funds are made available based upon the market performance of recycling commodities processed by CCRRA for the prior calendar year with funding levels subject to change each year. The total amount available for this mini-grant round is $91,000 and mini-grant awards can range from $1,000 - $15,000 depending on the project. Grant applications will be accepted online from Aug. 12 to Oct. 4, 2024. Potential applicants should check the CCRRA website beginning Aug. 12 for instructions. Centre County Expected to Receive Payment Increase in Second Round of Opioid Settlement Funding
Centre County expects to see an increase in annual payments when Pennsylvania begins distributing the next round of opioid settlement funding later this year. The county Board of Commissioners on Tuesday voted unanimously to participate in the second wave of funding from the national settlement of prescription opioid litigation. Pennsylvania will receive will over $1 billion from the settlements reached in 2021 and 2022 with pharmaceutical companies and retail pharmacy chains, with the majority being distributed to counties based on a formula that considers level of need and not necessarily population. Broadband authority OKs $20M for laptops
