Hart High Baseball Gives Back To The Community With Its Yearly Youth Baseball Camp

The reigning CIF Division II champions have once again partnered up with the Boys and Girls Club for their annual “Kids Day at the field.”

Constant cheers and laughter could be heard throughout the field Tuesday while players and coaches made sure the kids were enjoying themselves as they bonded over baseball and the camaraderie of being a part of something bigger than yourself.

This camp aims to not only teach the fundamentals of baseball, but to give the kids a chance to experience what the atmosphere is like when playing for a team and all the positive effects it can have both on and off the field. While hopefully inspiring the campers to pursue baseball or any other sport as they grow up.

Each participant from the Boys and Girls Club is paired up with two to three Hart High Baseball players, which allows them to get the best training experience possible. The players help them work on the X’s and O’s, such as hitting, pitching, fielding and baserunning. Coaches were also walking around making sure everything was going smoothly.

“Hart Baseball has been doing this for a few years now. It’s a great atmosphere and it takes our players back to when they were little and shows them the way to coach as well,” said newly appointed Head Coach of Hart High baseball, Brad Meza.

Meza is preparing for his first year as head coach after the departure of Jim Ozella, who retired after winning a title this past season.

“It’s an honor, going back to coach Murray, Coach Sanchez and then Coach Ozella, just my name being a part of that list is a huge deal,” said Meza.

Not only did Meza play for Coach Ozella, but he also got the chance to coach with him before he retired.

Coach Meza and the Hawks will have some big shoes to fill next season after winning both a league and CIF title.

Meza’s main focus for his group is for them to compete and not get complacent after last season’s success.

“You know, there’s a target on our back, but if we just compete and do what we know how to do I think we’ll be ok, just compete and get better every single day,” said Meza.

Meza and his staff are committed to providing a positive experience and valuable lessons to both the kids and their own athletes.

“Keep working hard in everything you do. You’re gonna get pushed back every so often in life or in baseball, but you just gotta keep pushing through. Doesn’t matter what it is, anything you want to do, you gotta keep pushing,” said Meza when asked about a piece of advice he’d give to the campers or his own athletes.

Hart Baseball Booster Club Secretary Koi Howard attends the event every year and loves being a part of the community outreach that comes with it.

“We like to remind our student-athletes that with ability comes responsibility, but in sharing your gifts comes great joy and satisfaction. Sharing your talents is a way to find your higher purpose,” said Howard.
