The Santa Rosa woman who was stabbed and killed Sunday night on a Santa Rosa trail was identified Wednesday.

Lisa Shiffer-McCool, 61, was found unresponsive about 11 p.m. Sunday on the Prince Memorial Greenway, between Santa Rosa Avenue and A Street. She had at least one stab wound to her upper body and was pronounced dead at the spot near downtown.

Police detained two “persons of interest” who may be connected with the fatal stabbing, but they have yet to identify a suspect or suspects, Sgt. Brandon Matthies said.

The two were possibly part of the altercation that preceded the stabbing that left Shiffer-McCool dead on the trail.

Police took the two to the station downtown Monday and Tuesday, where they were questioned and searched along with their belongings. They were subsequently released.

Matthies said investigators have yet to locate the weapon used to stab the woman. The cause of the fight has also not yet been determined or if others were involved.

Matthies said police were familiar with Shiffer-McCool and described her as homeless. According to preliminary findings, she spent time around downtown and the greenway earlier Sunday.

She was identified Wednesday by the Sonoma County Coroner.

Investigators are still asking any witnesses come forward. Some have approached police and others at nearby homeless encampments have been interviewed.
