National Georgia Day: tell us your favorite thing about the peach state

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV)—Saturday marks the Peach state’s own special day of recognition, National Georgia Day.

To celebrate here are 10 facts about Georgia:

• Georgia was the first state to lower the legal voting age from 21 to 18 in 1943.
• Over the years, Georgia has had five state capitals, Savannah, Augusta, Louisville, Milledgeville and finally Atlanta.
• Georgia was the youngest of the original 13 colonies, being founded in 1732.
• Georgia has two state flowers, the Cherokee rose and the azalea. The Cherokee rose is the official state flower of Georgia, and the azalea is the state’s wildflower.
• Athens, Ga. has a tree that legally owns itself.
• The founder of the Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon was born in Savannah, Ga where she started the first troop of 18 girls.
• The World’s Largest Peach Cobbler is made in Fort Valley, Ga. every year at the Georgia Peach Festival.
• The first Masters Tournament was held in 1934 and was called Augusta National Invitation Tournament until it was changed. The golf tournament has been held in the first full week of April since 1940.
• Cumberland Island has around 120-140 non-native feral horses and are thought by some to be decedents of horses brought over by the Spanish in the 1500s.
• Georgia’s state insect is the Western Honeybee. It helps pollinate more than 50 commercial crops in Georgia.
