Kids Fishing Derby to be held on Lake Hayward

Multiple organizations and businesses will sponsor a Kids Fishing Derby from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday June 1 at Lake Hayward Beach Park.

The event is free to youth ages 1-15 (must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). Youth will fish from shore around the park and from the large fishing pier. Prizes will be awarded to participants for catching the largest fish in each age category.

Bait will be provided and fishing gear will be available to borrow if needed.

There will be a casting contest, and a lure-making booth with Frank Pratt, where kids can design and build their own fishing baits.

After fishing, all participants will earn prizes or receive fishing gear gifts.

The Derby is a 60-year Hayward tradition. It is sponsored by the Hayward Rod and Gun Club in partnership with Muskies Inc, Sawyer County Outdoor Projects and Education (SCOPE), the Hayward Bass Club, Hayward Bait and Bottle Shop, Outdoor Creations, the Wisconsin DNR, WRLS Radio and several others.
