Schaumburg standoff ends with alleged shooter in custody after tree trimmer shot over noise: police

A standoff in Schaumburg on Braintree Drive ended Wednesday night with an alleged shooter in custody.

Police said they were called to the 800 block of South Braintree around 2:50 p.m. for a reporter of a person with a gunshot wound.

They said their initial investigation has found there was a dispute about noise between a resident and a contracted tree trimmer from Davey Tree Expert. The resident then shot the tree trimmer. Police gave the individual aid, and the person was taken to the hospital.

The shooter then barricaded himself inside his residence, police said. The road remains shut down in both directions on Braintree from Cornell Lane to Cambridge Drive, police said.

Police made multiple attempts to make contact with the barricaded person. During the standoff, SWAT officers also used a tactical to break into the front door.

"They got them going around the back, armored vehicles in the back with tons of lights on it. They got guys with shields and they're running back and forward from vehicle to vehicle," said witness Sam Saia.

Davey Tree Expert released a statement on the incident, saying, "We were horrified and devastated to learn of the shooting of a Davey Tree employee at a jobsite in Schaumburg, Illinois. Our thoughts and prayers are with our employee, his family, and the teammates who witnessed this tragic incident. Our focus is on the health of our employee who was transported to the hospital. Davey Tree will be cooperating with authorities and thanks them for their quick response and service toward keeping our communities safe."

Officers established a wide perimeter around a home, with SWAT officers and armored vehicles.

"They had the army vehicle out there with six or eight guys in each vehicle and there was some lady talking," said witness Sean Weeks.

On Weeks' video, a woman is heard urging the person inside to pick up the phone.

The man was taken into custody shortly before 9:45 p.m., police said. An investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
