The small village of Alamos, Sonora, Mexico has been a Sister City of Scottsdale since 1969 and continues to inspire creativity in the local and visiting artists.

The Scottsdale Artist School and Scottsdale Sister Cities Association have invited fourteen of the best Alamos artists and artisans to display their latest works in Scottsdale March 19–30. Their creations will be open to the public, free of charge, at the Scottsdale Artist’s School, 3720 N. Marshall Way. Viewing will be between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Five of the artists and artisans are coming from Alamos and will be attending the exhibition on Thursday through Saturday, March 21–23. A free reception with refreshments is scheduled 5:30–7 p.m. Thursday, providing the public an opportunity to meet and discuss their works.

Attendees of the reception will be encouraged to join the Alamos artists in the Old Town Scottsdale Art Walk immediately following.

Two free workshops will be offered Saturday, March 23, also at the Scottsdale Artist’s School.

Starting at 9 a.m., artist Katherine Callingham will lead a class on the use of clay. Attendees will be able to use clay from Alamos that helps make Ana Luisa’s objects so special. Some of these creations will be included in the exhibition.

A second workshop will be led by Ana Alejandra Anaya Rojo on traditional drawing at 11 a.m. Ana Alejandra’s specialties that will be on display at the exhibit include paintings of Alamos landscape, architecture, and culture in oil.

For the young budding artists, while the workshops are taking place, youth art activities will be taking place in the patio of the Scottsdale Artist’s School.

This will be the Third Alamos Artists and Artisans Exhibit and Reception. The success of the first two has resulted in it being held at the Artist School in Scottsdale for the first time.

Reservations are not required but are encouraged for the workshops to insure a place at the table. Go to: https://www.scottsdalesistercities.org/events/artists-of-alamos-workshops-at-scottsdale-artists-school

Alamos is nestled in a valley of the Mexican Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains. Its cobblestone streets are nestled between restored old Spanish villas. The arches, cornices and interior squares not only inspire artists, but are popular educational experiences for future architects. Alamos has been designated as a “Pueblo Magico” by the Mexican government. Scottsdale is the first Arizona city to have a sister city in Mexico.
